TikTok could face a £27 million fine
The ICO’s provisional findings on TikTok’s data processing allege that the company processed children’s data under the age of 13 without obtaining the necessary parental consent, and that it failed to provide users with accurate information in a clear, understandable manner. In addition, the ICO says that TikTok processed special category data without legal grounds to do so.
The ICO served the company a notice of intent on 26 September, saying that “The Commissioner’s findings in the notice are provisional. No conclusion should be drawn at this stage that there has, in fact, been any breach of data protection law or that a financial penalty will ultimately be imposed. We will carefully consider any representations from TikTok before taking a final decision.”
