SALARY: £68,000-£95,000 PLUS BENEFITS
The Home Office has a compelling mission: to keep our borders secure and our citizens safe. We have three main systems – Homeland Security, Law Enforcement, Border, Immigration and Citizenship and are supported by our Corporate Enablers and Capabilities function. Our employees number around 30,000 dedicated and talent people, in a variety of roles, from policy-making and working with Ministers to those delivering front line operations and we are one of the most varied and complex Whitehall departments contending with a range of social issues.
The Data Protection Act 2018 updates our data protection laws for the digital age, placing greater responsibility on organisations to ensure they have stringent policies in place, and allows for heavy penalties of up to 20 million Euros, or 4% of annual global turnover, for failures to act in accordance with current legislation. The post-holder will have accountability for assuring the Home Office’s compliance with data protection legislation and providing the Home Office with independent professional advice on best practice.
You will be a highly proficient Data Protection professional and possess expert knowledge of data protection laws, assurance and practice.
This is a broad and highly influential role within a vast and complex organisation. Applicants must be able to evidence a track record of achievement in a significant, senior Data Protection role leading on risk assessment, compliance assessment and assurance. In order to fulfil this role effectively, you will be able to engage confidently with and advise a broad range of Home Office staff who control and process personal data, reporting findings to Ministers and Senior Officials including the Permanent Secretary.
This is a unique and exciting senior leadership opportunity. You will play an integral role in providing professional advice and support across the Home Office on all Data Protection matters, working closely with and the Information Commissioners Office. - Senior Privacy and Information Lawyer - Ref: PLB0126
The candidate is a senior privacy and information lawyer, currently working in-house for a well-known ICT company.
Particular areas of expertise include supporting and advising on:
- The practical consequences of the GDPR, the current ePrivacy Directive, and the potential impact of the draft ePrivacy Regulation.
- Contractual negotiations, marketing initiatives, and data subject rights.
- Online behavioural advertising.
- Children’s privacy, “internet regulation” and AI.
- Content filtering online and net neutrality.
- Lobbying initiatives and industry dialogue.
- Cyber security and breach notification requirements and crisis management.
- The UN Guiding Principles.
Prior to going in-house, the candidate trained and practised in the Litigation department of a magic circle law firm where he gained experience of running internal investigations and Court cases, as well as advising on complex and challenging legislation and regulation.
During his time with the law firm, he also gained in-house experience during secondments to a large investment bank and an oil super-major.
The candidate has a strong academic background and is CIPP/E qualified.

A lawyer qualified in England & Wales, and with IAPP certification, has recently relocated to the UK and is seeking to join a data protection team as a solicitor. With a wealth of legal experience gained in another Commonwealth, common law jurisdiction and with the ability to transition into data privacy, this candidate should be well suited for either non-contentious or contentious projects, within a law firm or within an in-house data privacy team with international interests.
Other practice experience includes commercial contracts, intellectual property and company law.
