The ICO approves the first UK certification scheme criteria

Age verification is one of the tricky aspects of the Children’s Code for which compliance was required from 2 September. It has already influenced regulators and major tech companies globally. By Laura Linkomies.

The first ICO certification schemes have emerged in the fields of IT asset disposal services and age verification. Given the ICO’s emphasis on protecting children’s data – compliance was required with the Age Appropriate Design Code (AADC or the ‘Children’s Code’)(1) from 2 September – this a welcome development (PL&B UK Report May 2021 p.10). While certification helps organisations to demonstrate compliance, being certified can also create a competitive advantage as people are more willing to trust a company with certification.

Certification provides companies with a framework to follow. In the field of age verification, the Age Check Certification Scheme (ACCS)(2) has developed criteria for two schemes, the first relating to age assurance and the second looking at children’s online privacy in general.
