Are you ready for the ICO Children’s Code and a new IC?

The ICO is urging organisations and businesses to make the necessary changes to their online services and products before the September enforcement date. By Laura Linkomies.

Initial findings from industry research set up by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) show that three-quarters of businesses surveyed are aware of the Children’s Code. Whilst the ICO has created resources for business to prepare, how many are actually taking action?(1) There still seems to be some confusion about who the Code applies to. The answer is information society services likely to be accessed by children in the UK. This means “many apps, online games, connected toys and devices, search engines, social media platforms and websites that offer goods, news or education services”. Importantly, this is not limited to services specifically directed at children, who, for the purposes of the code, are defined as under 18-year olds.
