Will the EU streamline its data laws?

A panel at the 37th PL&B Conference bought together four experts to discuss the challenges of data regulation in the EU in terms of clarity and coordination, and prospects for reform.

Cecilia Alvarez, Director of Privacy Policy Engagement EMEA at Meta, based in Spain, framed the discussion in terms of the EU’s ambitions for data and technology. In 2021, the EU declared its “digital decade” ambitions to promote fair access and use of data, to enable it to be shared appropriately, open up data silos, make better use of Internet of Things data, and promote competition. Creating a single market for data and enabling organisations to share it safely is seen as critical to support innovation, investment, and growth, and to prevent the region falling further behind other global blocs in terms of competitiveness, digital skills, connectivity, and innovation.
