Can certifications provide a win-win- win for companies, regulators, and individuals?

While non-compliance often draws significant attention, the efforts towards compliance frequently go unnoticed and are largely perceived as a cost by data controllers and processors. In such cases, certification as per the EU GDPR can add substantial value to these compliance efforts, transforming them into a rewarding process.

At PL&B’s 37th Annual International Conference, a panel consisting of Sébastien Ziegler, President of Europrivacy International Board of Experts, ECCP; Sophie Nerbonne, Director for Economic Co-regulation, CNIL; Colin Bennett, Professor Emeritus, University of Victoria, Canada; and Efrain Castaneda, Director, Privacy Counsel Research, OneTrust discussed the manifold benefits of certification. The panel emphasised how data protection certifications can provide a competitive edge and operational efficiencies for businesses, and ensure trust and transparency for individuals. A collaborative approach, involving co-regulation and mutual accountability, can create a robust framework for sustainable data protection practices that benefit all stakeholders involved.
