The book, based on Federico Marengo’s PhD Thesis, discusses data protection provisions related to AI, and the way forward in terms of regulating and managing the technology.
Marengo first analyses the role of the Council of Europe and the EU GDPR as a regulatory framework, and then usefully moves on to discuss how we could overcome the limitations in the GDPR. In this area, he sees two separate work streams; addressing algorithmic transparency, and addressing fairness and non-discrimination when processing personal data using AI systems. The most interesting part of the book is where Marengo proposes several ways we could develop mechanisms to mitigate the risks posed by AI systems.
