Ireland DPC opens inquiry into Shein’s data transfers to China

Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) has opened an inquiry into Infinite Styles Services Co. Ltd. (SHEIN Ireland) on SHEIN Ireland’s transfers of EU/EEA citizens’ personal data to China.

The DPC will also examine the company’s compliance regarding principles relating to data processing and transparency obligations.

Deputy Commissioner Graham Doyle said:

“Recent regulatory action by the DPC, together with complaints to other European supervisory authorities, has brought data transfers to China, in particular, into focus. The inquiry is an important strategic priority for the DPC and we intend to cooperate closely with our peer European Supervisory Authorities as part of the investigation.”

The DPC’s decision and €530 million fine on TikTok on a similar matter is currently under appeal.
