It is perhaps a universally acknowledged truth that the adoption of workplace monitoring technologies (WMT) is becoming increasingly common and may soon be seen as essential to ensuring digital and physical security in the workplace, preventing fraud, and tracking time, attendance and performance. With the proportion of organisations actively tracking workers’ digital activity rising from one in five in 2023 to one in three by 2025,(1) the UK Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has published a consultation on WMT, seeking views on whether—and if so, how—further governmental intervention could ensure WMT is adopted and used fairly, transparently and responsibly.
