ICO has to prioritise its functions
Despite new legislation and structural change at the ICO, its core duties remain the same. By Laura Linkomies.
Information Commissioner John Edwards said at an IAPP event in London in February that he will be the Chair of the new Board when the ICO transitions to its new structure under the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 (DUAA). The corporation sole that has served as the legal status of his role since 1984 will be retired. Paul Arnold (ICO) was appointed as CEO on 25 June 2025. Additionally, non-executive directors will be announced soon.
“We can now pause and reflect on what has been achieved in the last four years,” Edwards said. He reflected on the challenges the ICO faced at the time when he was appointed. “Clarity and certainty were needed for DPOs. There was anxiety about the scale and pace of change by stakeholders.” He tried to offer reassurance and certainty.
