Making a career in data protection
You don’t have to be a lawyer, but you do need to have ‘a privacy mindset’, agreed a panel at the ICO’s online conference on 8 October. By Stewart Dresner.
This diverse panel was chaired by John Edwards, Information Commissioner, UK and brought together Lisa Greaves, Data Protection Commissioner, Barbados; Aimee Smith, Director, Data, the Metropolitan Police in London (the Met); and Gary Davis, Global Director of Privacy and Law Enforcement Requests, Apple. They discussed what they had learned during their careers making a success of leading the data protection law team in their organisations.
Their starting positions were very different. Greaves, with a background as an anti-money laundering lawyer, moved to data protection work during the pandemic. She is the first DP Commissioner in Barbados and started with no office and no staff.
