Wish lists for new data protection framework

Stakeholders gathered in September to discuss aspects they would like to see in the new data protection bill. By Laura Linkomies.

Ever since the Smart Data and Digital Information Bill was included in the King’s Speech in July(1), stakeholders have been pondering on what will be included in the new text. This was also the case at a Westminster e-forum(2) event on 4 September.

Chaired by Lord Clement-Jones, Liberal Democrat Lords Spokesperson for Science, Innovation and Technology, the online seminar explored the legislative and commercial landscape for data protection in the UK, and key considerations for the new law.

Chris Combemale, CEO, Data & Marketing Association (DMA) talked about their consumer study which identified several different attitudes to data privacy; the Pragmatists, the Concerned, the Data Fundamentalists (often the older segment). We can conclude from the results that data protection needs to be risk based, he said.
