ICO approves certification scheme for law firms

Legal service providers will be able to demonstrate their UK GDPR compliance with this scheme which could become industry standard. By Laura Linkomies.

The ICO’s 13 February announcement of the Legal Services Operational Privacy Certification Scheme (LOCS) is the fifth set of UK GDPR certification criteria that the ICO has approved. It will be applicable to law firms, barristers and solicitors. Data processors/sub-processors within the scope could include, for example, software providers, Software-as-a-Service (SAAS) providers or external consultants.

The scheme owner, 2Twenty4 Consulting Ltd, defines the benefits of certification being a mitigating factor in the eyes of the ICO in case of an investigation. Also, the certification may be referenced as a “supplemental measure” for cross-border transfers of data.
