UK: Data protection shake-up looks certain

No clarity over details yet but change is coming in one form or another – and fast. By Laura Linkomies.

On announcing the Brexit Freedom’s Bill (no text available yet), the government stated on data and AI that the bill aims to facilitate the UK “moving in a faster, more agile way to regulate new digital markets and AI and creating a more proportionate and less burdensome data rights regime compared to the EU’s GDPR.”

The government is now in the middle of analysing the thousands of responses it received to the consultation Data: A New Direction, but we can expect its response this spring and a White Paper by the end of the year.

However, it is not quite clear yet what form the reform will take. While many will have supported the government’s aim to cut red tape and boost innovation, caution has been expressed by business regarding the potential threat to the UK’s EU adequacy status.
