Ireland DPC prioritises AI and prepares to issue a report on its approach
The Ireland DPA is increasingly busy with enquiries about AI and is preparing for its new AI responsibilities under the AI Act. Laura Linkomies reports from Dublin.
The intersection of AI and privacy is a large part of Ireland’s data regulator’s work, says Cathal Ryan, Deputy Commissioner, Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC). Speaking at PL&B’s conference hosted by McCann FitzGerald in Dublin on 14 May, Ryan, who has responsibility for consultation and supervision, said that the authority will soon issue a report detailing its approach to AI and in particular generative AI.
As AI issues now account for 25% of all controller engagement, and as engagement on generative AI-related products represents 79% of such activity, AI is very much a priority at the office. Between 2021 and 2025, the DPC engaged with companies in relation to approximately 180 AI products and services.
