Navigating the complexity of being a Global DPO

The role of data protection officer – mandated for many businesses under the EU GDPR – can mean wearing many hats and a complex workload. So how does the role scale up to meet the demands of an international business such as transport platform Uber?
Simon Hania is Senior Director, Global Data Protection Office & DPO, Uber, Netherlands. “We are a tech company building the technologies to provide transport,” he said. “That is very much data driven and based on personal data.” With Uber operating in 1,000+ cities in over 75+ countries, the privacy function is not just the DPO. The business has a wide variety of privacy functions such as privacy engineer, privacy product team, privacy legal team and privacy product manager, he said.
