CPDP conference debates AI though a privacy lens

The CPDP 2025 conference presented a cross-section of presentations on AI regulation, data governance, and the global impact of European digital legislation. By Laura Linkomies.

This year’s conference, aptly entitled The World is Watching gave a good insight into the world of AI – how fast this area is developing and what we as privacy professionals need to do now to set the privacy guardrails in the changing data protection landscape.

The 21-23 May conference in Brussels, Belgium was opened by Professor Paul de Hert of Vrije Universiteit Brussel who highlighted the societal importance of the conference. He said that while there are many more data laws globally, this development is somewhat overshadowed by other factors. Europe has become very confident in its regulatory capacity but we need to reflect on the current situation now that the EU is talking about deregulation.
