Framing consent and parental controls around the best interests of children

Maisie Robinson of the University of Birmingham reports on age-based consent mechanisms and why we should rethink consent.

During a PL&B Conference: What’s Right for Children and their Data? (1) Dr Claire Bessant (Socio-legal Scholar and Associate Professor, Northumbria University), Jonathan Dunne (Director, Regulatory Affairs, Google), Beatrice Cavicchioli (Senior Privacy & Product Counsel, k-ID) and Jen Persson (Director, Defend Digital Me) explored the topic of consent, parental controls and how companies can best place themselves and their practices within this complicated picture to cultivate appropriate spaces through good practice.

Panel chair Anna Gamvros (Partner and Head of Asia Pacific Privacy and Cyber, A&O Shearman, Hong Kong/Australia) commenced by reflecting on the diverse range of digital consent legislation and practices across the APAC region. Gamvros explained how the complex consent landscape “creates an array of compliance requirements, which is particularly true for multi-jurisdictional companies and those providing a global service,” before turning to the panellists to hear their wide-ranging insights.
