Africa’s regional privacy culture starts to take shape

African Data Protection Authorities commit to harmonising data protection laws, and enhanced coordination. Elena Testa reports from Nigeria.

Nigeria hosted, 6-8 May, the eighth Network of African Data Protection Authorities (NADPA-RADPD) and Annual General Meeting (AGM), titled Balancing Innovation in Africa: Data Protection and Privacy in Emerging Technologies(1).

Key recommendations from the Conference and AGM include:

  1. Collaboration between government and business to formulate comprehensive strategies;
  2. Building digital economies enabling innovation without compromising privacy rights;
  3. Investing in the development of human capital in Africa;
  4. Establishing a framework for harmonisation of privacy laws and implementing the Malabo Convention across the region(2).
