Australia continues to push forward on online safety policy

Privacy appears to be an afterthought as groundbreaking legislation bans social media for under 16s. By Lizzie O’Shea, principal lawyer and civil society advocate, based in Australia.

Australia has been a world leader in the field of regulating for online safety. In 2015, the Australian government established the world’s first independent national online safety regulator, the Children’s eSafety Commissioner. This mission quickly expanded beyond children (dropping the reference to children from its name) to safeguarding all Australians at risk of online harms and to promote safer, more positive online experiences. Now, the 2024 controversial amendment to the 2021 Online Safety Act aims to establish a minimum age for social media use, and places responsibility on social media platforms for the safety of their users.
