G7 DPAs and GPA further develop ‘Data Free Flow with Trust’
Global Privacy Authorities agree on what the ‘trust’ element entails in data flows. By Marc Schlegel of the German Federal Data Protection Authority.
This October, two of the most influential international fora of Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) adopted documents to further develop the concept of “Data Free Flow with Trust” (DFFT). The G7 DPA Roundtable published a comparative analysis of GDPR certification and the Global Cross-Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) System, whereas the Global Privacy Assembly (GPA) adopted a resolution dedicated to DFFT and an effective regulation of global data flows.
G7 DPA Roundtable
The DPAs of the G7 nations (Italy, France, Canada, Japan, Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom), joined by the European Union, started to meet annually in 2021 on the initiative of the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) during the UK’s G7 Presidency. The inaugural virtual Roundtable 2021 was followed by physical meetings in Bonn 2022 and Tokyo 2023. Building on the outcomes and achievements of the past meetings, this year’s Roundtable was hosted and chaired by the Italian Garante per la Protezione dei Dati Personali (GPDP) in Rome and focused on current key topics of privacy and data protection, such as the further development of DFFT, as well as emerging technologies and enhancing international enforcement cooperation.
