Looking into the future of DPA enforcement, personalised ads and international transfers
Recent large GDPR fines, national DPA and EDPB power struggle – and of course Max Schrems in the mix. What comes out of these ingredients? By Laura Linkomies.
The IAPP Intensive London 2023 conference audience was in for a treat listening to a conversation between the Chairman and founder of noyb, Max Schrems, whose organisation has launched some of the biggest cases around data protection, and Elizabeth Denham CBE, former UK Information Commissioner. Moderated by IAPP’s Research Director Joe Jones, the session explored enforcement, adtech and international data transfers.
Jones reminded the audience of the EDPB and Ireland DPC enforcement on Meta’s advertising which resulted in €400 million fines and a request for corrective action. The EDPB found that Meta Ireland was not entitled to rely on the “contract” for its legal basis for its processing of personal data for the purpose of behavioural advertising(1).
