A tribute to David Flaherty: Privacy scholar, regulator and consultant

Professor Colin Bennett of University of Victoria looks back on the career of this privacy pioneer and former Information and Privacy Commissioner of British Columbia, Canada.

On 11 October 2022, David Flaherty passed away in Victoria BC at the age of 82. He was born on 25 February 1940, in Campbellton, New Brunswick and raised in Montreal, Quebc. Having received the gold medal in history from McGill University, he received his doctorate in history from Columbia University. He went on to teach American history at Princeton University and the University of Virginia before returning to Canada, where he was appointed Professor in the law and history faculties at the University of Western Ontario. In 1993, he was appointed as British Columbia’s first Information and Privacy Commissioner.
