The GDPR enforcement gap

GDPR enforcement is accelerating but is still not what was expected. What are the issues and possible future improvements to the One-Stop-Shop? By Laura Linkomies.

This year, the CPDP Brussels conference was organised online in January due to the global pandemic. Nevertheless, it gathered together an impressive group of speakers who addressed the current privacy dilemmas at more than 80 panels across five online stages. This year’s conference theme, Enforcing Rights in a Changing World, addressed how data protection and privacy are maintained post-pandemic.

A panel discussion on enforcement issues was moderated by Ursula Pachl, Deputy Director General of BEUC, the European consumer organisation. She explained that BEUC is currently studying how the GDPR works for data subjects. The One-Stop-Shop should have been a positive development for business but there are some significant shortcomings. BEUC has issued a report called The Long and Winding Road which looks into this issue from the consumer perspective(1).
