How Europe is working towards Digital Sovereignty
The turbulent past year has highlighted the importance of European cooperation, and EU-based data solutions to ensure robust data protection. By Signe Agerskov, IT University of Copenhagen.
In March, four EU leaders, Angela Merkel (Germany), Mette Frederiksen (Denmark), Sanna Marin (Finland) and Kaja Kallas (Estonia), wrote a letter(1) encouraging the European Commission President to support digital sovereignty in Europe. In the letter they call for EU-based data cloud solutions, an EU ecosystem for digital identities and digital sovereignty in critical areas.
They mention that the Commission should propose new initiatives as well as strengthen ongoing initiatives. The letter was sent, despite several initiatives in Europe that are already working towards digital sovereignty in the EU.
