UN appoints Special Rapporteur on Privacy

The United Nations appointed on 1 July Joseph Cannataci as a Special Rapporteur on the Right of Privacy for the next three years. The rapporteur’s mandate includes to:

  • identify possible obstacles to the protection of the right of privacy,

  • identify, exchange and promote principles and best practices at the national, regional and international levels, and

  • submit proposals and recommendations to the Human Rights Council of the UN.

PL&B’s Asia Pacific Editor, Professor Graham Greenleaf, analyses in PL&B International Report the rapporteur’s role, if any, in advancing an international privacy standard. The August issue will be published tomorrow.
