LIBE Committee recommends Bruno Gencarelli to be the new EDPS
The European Parliament’s LIBE Committee orientation vote today on the appointment of the next European Data Protection Supervisor expressed preference for Bruno Gencarelli, Head of International Data Flows and Protection Unit at the European Commission.
The European Data Protection Supervisor is appointed by a joint decision of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union for a five-year term. A decision by the Parliament and the Council is expected soon.
At the hearing, Gencarelli stressed the need for more resources for the EDPS, development of compliance tools such as certifications, and enhanced cooperation with national Data Protection Authorities globally.
The other candidates, who were all interviewed today by the LIBE committee are:
- François Pellegrini, Professor in Informatics at the University of Bordeaux,
- Anna Pouliou, Chair of the Data Protection Commission at CERN, and
- Wojciech Wiewiórowski, European Data Protection Supervisor since December 2019.
