Irish presidency suggests watering down EU draft DP Regulation

An informal European Union justice ministers’ meeting taking place today in Dublin is discussing areas where the Irish presidency to the Council of the European Union sees scope for changes. The presidency says that the following issues should be reconsidered:

- whether the household exemption is currently too narrowly defined
- whether the ‘right to be forgotten’ is a reasonable or feasible idea
- whether there should be more discretion in the application of the proposed fines: Data Protection Authorities could take into account mitigating factors in organisations’ compliance efforts, for example, adherence to an approved code of conduct or privacy seal.
