ICO makes recommendations on how to use AI in recruitment
The ICO is concerned that some AI tools used in recruitment collect far more personal information than necessary and retain it indefinitely to build large databases of potential candidates without their knowledge.
The ICO issued on 6 November its recommendations for organisations using such tools, based on the findings from consensual audits with several providers and developers of AI tools for recruitment. The ICO audits revealed that some AI tools were not processing personal information fairly – for example, by allowing recruiters to filter out candidates with certain protected characteristics.
In the audit process, the ICO made nearly 300 recommendations to these companies. The key findings and recommendations from these consensual audits have now been published in the AI in Recruitment Outcomes Report which addresses issues such as fairness, accuracy, or bias issues in the AI and its outputs.
The Data (Access and Use) Bill that is currently going through Parliament would make changes to the provisions on automated decision-making. Privacy Laws & Business had organised an event on 25 November with DSIT on the changes that the Bill will make to the Data Protection Act and the UK GDPR.
