Germany on its way to adopting a GDPR implementation Act
The German Bundestag yesterday adopted the Bill on the adjustment of the Federal Data Protection Act (DSAnpUG-EU) to implement the provisions of the EU General Data Protection Regulation. Now it is up to the Federal Council to approve the law, which will then enter into force on 25 May 2018.
Germany is the first EU country to introduce a new law to follow the GDPR and no doubt other countries will observe with interest the kind of statutory adjustments which are being made in the area of its national data protection law.
The coalition government has set itself an ambitious goal to adopt this Act before the upcoming parliamentary elections on 24 September.
Germany has given its own interpretation to some of the provisions - the previous draft, which was criticised by the European Commission, was withdrawn.
