European Parliament approves its negotiating position on the AI Digital Omnibus

The European Parliament adopted on 26 March its final negotiating position on the Digital Omnibus on AI which is intended to amend the EU Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act, for example, by postponing certain high-risk AI obligations.

The MEPs propose several amendments, including fixed dates for its application to high-risk AI systems. For those specifically listed in the regulation (including those involving biometrics, and those used in critical infrastructure, education, employment, essential services, law enforcement, justice and border management), MEPs propose 2 December 2027 for its application date.

For AI systems that are covered by EU sectoral legislation on safety and market surveillance, MEPs propose the application date of 2 August 2028, saying that fixed dates would ensure predictability and legal certainty.

Next there will be negotiations with the Council of the EU which adopted its negotiating position on 13 March, and the Commission in the so called Trilogue process.
