EU consults on AI sandboxes

The European Commission is currently seeking views on the establishment and operation of AI regulatory sandboxes as mandated by the EU AI Act.

Sandboxes facilitate companies bringing new products to the market as they provide a space to train and test innovative AI systems for a limited time in collaboration with a regulatory authority. A data protection authority will work with organisations for a period supervising when personal data is processed for the development, training and/or testing of AI systems in the context of an AI regulatory sandbox.

The consultation will feed into an implementing act that will set out the common rules for the establishment and operation of AI regulatory sandboxes. The draft implementing act is open for comment until 13 January. AI regulatory sandboxes should be established in the Member States by 2 August 2026.
