Egypt adopts a data protection law

On 15 July 2020, the Egyptian Personal Data Protection Law No. 151/2020 (the Law) was issued by the Egyptian Government. This will be the first data protection legislation in Egypt and the Law will apply to any business that collects or processes personal data of its employees, customers or any other individuals. The Law will become effective as of 14 October 2020. However, there will be a grace period of one year from the date of publication of the executive regulations for organisations to comply with the provisions of the new legislation. The Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technology is required to issue the executive regulations within six months from the effective date of the Law.

An article by Clyde & Co outlining the key features of the Law will appear in the next issue of PL&B International Report.
