DUAB on statute books by Easter, minister says

Chris Bryant, Minister of State at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology says that the Data (Use and Access) Bill will complete its Parliamentary process around Easter. The Bill’s Committee stage was completed at the House of Commons yesterday, meaning that the Bill will next move to the Report stage, to be followed by Third Reading.

Speaking today at the IAPP conference in London, Bryant also told the audience that the government will legislate on AI in the next 18 months.

Information Commissioner John Edwards is keen to be the AI regulator for personal data but not for intellectual property. He said that the ICO will have a continued focus on AI and biometrics, for example the use of facial recognition technology with the police.

Speaking about children’s privacy, Edwards said that the ICO needs to hold the largest platforms to account. Reddit, Imgur and TikTok are currently being investigated. “This should serve as a warning to smaller companies too who also need to comply with the law and our children’s code,” Edwards said.
