Paris, France

Overview

This meeting provided a roundtable with the President, M. Alex Turk and senior members of France's Data Protection Commission, the Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés (CNIL).

The meeting included detailed presentations on France's new data protection law, how the CNIL organization is responding, the role of the newly defined company "correspondent", and how the CNIL will enforce the law and impose new and heavier sanctions.

CNIL staff also answered questions on issues such as transfers of personal data outside the European Economic Area; online and offline marketing; and monitoring of individuals in the workplace.

On the afternoon prior to the roundtable, lawyers from Ernst & Young and Bird & Bird gave a detailed briefing and introduction to France's new data protection law.
