Will fundamental rights apply to EU initiatives and EU-influenced laws around the world?

10 years after their adoption, GDPR principles are widely accepted in Europe and adopted as the gold standard across Asia, Africa, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, Canada and, indeed, the UK.

However, the EU’s ambitious initiative to put together its planned digital legislation into one Omnibus Digital Package is now under threat.

The aim of this conference, with sessions from many countries and sectors, is to explore how current data privacy legislation is working, its impact on business and its resilience in the face of commercial and political challenges to its interpretation. The EU architecture is based on data protection as a fundamental right. Now, even the longstanding definition of personal data is open to interpretation according to context.

The EU’s Digital Omnibus Package, including the Data Act, the AI Act, the Digital Markets Act and many more provisions, is an integral part of the EU’s current 5 year political programme. The conference will assess the extent to which this EU cluster of data related laws will continue to apply fundamental rights. Or will they be weakened under pressure? Will individuals’ rights be reduced as the cost of enabling innovative products and services to flourish?

Everyone agrees, in principle, with the goals of Clarification and Simplification. The broad question we will address is whether the fundamentals will continue to apply to the EU GDPR, its related Digital Omnibus package, and the EU-influenced laws around the world.
