‘Is My Boss a Bot’? Using AI in recruitment
The role of data protection in algorithmic recruitment was discussed by a panel at the CPDP Conference in May, led by the ICO. Laura Linkomies reports from Brussels.
Algorithms affect the lives of job seekers and workers all over the world. AI decisions, often relying on data gathered by automated monitoring of workers, should be subject to scrutiny and challenge. But what are the chances of individuals being able to do that?
A panel at the CPDP.ai conference discussed the data protection principles of transparency and fairness in this context; whether AI-driven recruitment and employment practices can be fair; and if so, how that can be achieved. Is Article 22 GDPR on automated decision-making sufficient to protect workers from unfair AI-driven employment practices? What does AI explainability mean in the workplace? Do workers need new or different data rights?
