Italy’s DPA tightens its approach to email tracking pixels

Email tracking pixels are invisible elements embedded in newsletters, transactional communications, and marketing automation flows that enable organizations to determine whether an email has been opened, when, on which device, and often through which email client. In combination with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems and behavioural analytics infrastructures, these signals feed profiling, segmentation, and automated decision-making systems.

Unlike cookies, which have been subject to extensive enforcement, litigation, and public scrutiny, email tracking pixels have remained under-regulated despite their comparable intrusiveness and capacity for behavioural monitoring.
