Generative AI and children: Risks and opportunities

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)(1) is rapidly becoming part of children’s(2) digital experiences, both through dedicated AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude, and through AI-powered features increasingly embedded in the digital environments children already use every day, including search engines, social media, messaging apps, gaming platforms, and educational technologies.(3) These developments create new opportunities for learning, creativity, and experimentation, while also introducing risks related to privacy, safety, information quality, manipulation, and AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM).(4)
