India’s Supreme Court threatens Meta over WhatsApp data sharing
What happens in India matters a great deal to WhatsApp. Graham Greenleaf reports.
India is Meta’s largest market for its WhatsApp service, with 535.8 million to 853.8 million monthly active users as of 2025-2026, representing nearly 97% market penetration among smartphone users.(1) “Roughly 80.8% of Indian internet users rely on WhatsApp for messaging and group chats”, scale that “proves its dominance for both personal messaging and business communication”. In comparison, it is only ranked third in the US, with about 100 million monthly users. WhatsApp contributes an estimated US$3.6 billion to US$5 billion per annum to Meta’s global revenues. WhatsApp has approximately 2.95 billion active users globally, about twice as many in the rest of the world as it has in India.(2) Indian regulation of WhatsApp is therefore of great commercial significance to Meta globally.
