2026: A year to start debating GDPR modifications
What do stakeholders wish to see on the menu? The current EU Commission Digital Omnibus proposals generated a lively debate in Brussels. By Laura Linkomies.
The debates on Data Protection Day, 28 January, revealed different reactions to the EU Commission’s proposal for the Digital Omnibus which includes important modifications to the GDPR.
The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), Wojciech Wiewiórowski, said that we need to simplify the framework without compromising existing data protection principles. We should also reflect on how Europe’s normative model can continue to inspire others, he said. His personal view was that effective enforcement in the digital world is a topic which requires constant exchanges between the regulators. Under discussion now is the proposal for a Digital Clearinghouse 2.0 to facilitate cooperation between the different regulators.
