France’s CNIL highlights the importance of privacy in mobile apps

Hannah Heilbuth from the University of Nottingham reports on a PL&B conference session that explored the CNIL’s Recommendation on Mobile Apps.

For many people, their phone is the terminal through which they access and engage with digital content and services. Smartphones have become an integral part of our personal lives, waking us up when we start our day, helping us to document what we do through photos and videos and allowing us to share our experiences with the people we love through texts and calls.

The applications an individual chooses to download, personalises the device adding in extra services and functionality allowing us to socialise, game, shop, bank, travel more efficiently and even monitor our health on the go. These mobile applications potentially have access to vast quantities of personal data which could include real-time location, live audio, and our contact list, amongst others.
