EU to restrict access to social media for children under the age of 15
The EU proposes a Kids Act to better protect children’s privacy. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, announced the proposal today in her State of Union speech. It is expected that the draft law which would restrict minors' access to social media platforms will be made public tomorrow. It will have a gradual approach taking into consideration the sensitivities of each age: no social media under the age of 13, and no personal accounts under the age of 15.
There will be mandatory safe design features for all accounts held by under 18s. Platforms will have to prove that they are safe for children, and a Digital Fairness Act will be proposed later this autumn to address addictive design.
