This conference brings together companies, regulators, NGOs, academics and A&O Shearman lawyers to discuss how responsible parties can work towards encouraging companies producing apps, websites and games to design them in a way that puts children’s interests first and empowers children so they can use the valuable and educational aspects of the internet in a safe way.

Keeping children safe online

Companies, including Lego, TikTok, Google, the BBC, k-ID, Yoti and Verifymy/The Age Verification Providers Association will showcase their designs for children as well as their interventions to keep young people safe online. NGOs representing children’s interests will express their perspectives on the principles of good design.

Panels will discuss industry efforts to help ensure that children's online experiences are appropriate for them as users, while simultaneously complying with data protection law.

Balancing children’s data rights and their autonomy

Companies can provide a safe environment for children recognising the need to secure data rights for children at crucial points in their lives. The best companies communicate with children in an appropriate manner at each stage of their developing maturity and in the specific context of the service or product provided.

Children should be enabled to explore the wider world and establish their identities both offline and online, and be encouraged to develop healthy relationships with the online world.

Sessions

  1. Identifying child-age users. Explaining age assurance verification methods.
  2. Navigating and managing risks regarding consent for the best interests of children.
  3. Designing online services and platforms with children in mind. Making data rights understandable and accessible for children.
  4. What is right for children and their data? Recommendations on how regulators and industry can work together to help children make good decisions about their data and have safe, healthy and fun experiences online.
