Chile is in the progress of drafting a new privacy law which would be more in line with EU style provisions.

"The Bill is not yet before the Congress but there was a public consultation last July," Paulina Silva of Carey y Cia said at the CPDP privacy conference in Brussels on 21 January. Also, an expert group has been working on the draft.

The text of the bill is expected to be published soon. The new provisions are likely to create a Data Protection Authority and higher fines. Currently, the maximum fine is the equivalent of around 3,000 euros and has never been imposed.

More information about the conference is available at www.cpdpconferences.org
